Sanjay lies in the median of Interstate 80 looking up at me. Traffic whizzes by, yet we are invisible, shielded from view by the V of our impact-spliced cars. We are somewhere between Vacaville and Davis, California. Nothing for miles in either direction: flat fields, distant farms, the blue suggestion of hills off to the west. Oleander shrubs tower over us: toxic leaves, lethal pink and white blossoms. Only deer can eat them without dying.

It’s too early Sunday morning for heavy traffic. What timing.

I cradle Sanjay in my arms and smile down at him. He shouldn’t have left me. I will make love to him again. I will convince him to stay. If it’s the last thing I do.

“Fancy running into each other like this.” Through his pain, Sanjay looks happy to see me. I find this strange. Couldn’t he tell I ran him off the road? But he is a generous soul. He may not suspect I did it on purpose. He is injured, perhaps severely; my presence comforts him. He puts his arms around me, but winces: something inside him is damaged. A grimace contorts his face, and sweat gleams on his brow.

“Don’t talk,” I tell him.

Doctors would caution me against exposing myself to the blood now dribbling down his chin, but so what? I have swallowed how much of his semen? Had him inside me how many times, raw? I wipe the blood away from his mouth with my shirt sleeve, then kiss him. Copper electric taste on my tongue. Him.

“I’ve missed you,” I tell him. “I’ve missed you so much. I never would have wanted something like this to happen.”

“Have you called 911?” His voice is weak.

“Yes,” I lie. “As soon as I recognized your car.”

The lie doesn’t matter. Someone else will have made the call. Any minute now, a highway patrol cruiser will screech to a stop next to our wreckage. Maybe a fire truck, maybe an ambulance. This is a busy and well-patrolled expanse of nothingness. It won’t take long for help to arrive.

“Sanjay. I love you so much. Stay with me,” I beg him.

The tears welling up are sincere. I do not want to lose him. It would feel like losing a part of myself. Which is why he should not have left. He should not have said he’d leave first thing in the morning to stay with friends in Sacramento until he could sort everything out, that maybe we ought to take a break from each other.

“How badly are you injured?” I ask, unbuttoning his shirt, red linen, red like the blood on his face.

“I don’t know. Everything hurts.”

“Stay with me, Sanjay,” I tell him. “You’ll be all right. Everything will be all right. Help is coming.”

I undo his belt.

“What are you doing?” he asks.

“Checking for bruises.”

He complies. He lets me unzip his pants.

What few cars are on the freeway at this hour do not stop. This is good. I slide Sanjay’s black jeans down his hips, exposing his cock.
